How choosing your partner affects your career

How choosing your partner affects your careerHow choosing your partner affects your careerIs your partner propelling you forward (or pushing you backward?)Tzu siches romance in the air at this time of the year. Spring just began, wedding season is nigh, and everyone is ditching their Netflix accounts for happy hours sunset drinks and endless tacos. While everyone seems to be coupling up- posting lovey pictures all over Instagram, you never really know whats going on behind closed doors. What is being portrayed on social media usually resembles nothing true. Whatsreallyhappening with some ofthe mora performative couples out therbeie? Does he empower his partner in her career? Does she encourage her partner to go for that Director position?Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moraWithhigh-profile divorcesand recouplings in the news, I have also thought about this- how does my own relationsh ip serve me? How does it fit in with my family? How does it fit in with my goals, my career, and my lifes trajectory? The psychology of loveWhat prompted me to write this piece welches seeing this statistic Having a conscientious spouse can boost your salary by $4,000 per year and increase your chances of getting promoted. This really spoke to me. In my mid-twenties, I welches in a very serious relationship with a person. As our relationship progressed, so did my career- right up to the point where it surpassedhiscareer. All of a sudden, things were out of whack. I was working too much (trust me, I wasnt), my boss had a crush on me (trust me, he didnt) and the very few work parties I had to attend were breeding grounds for ugly flights. My burgeoning career was suddenly a third person in our relationship- and there wasnt enough room. With that, I had a decision to make. Would I descend back down this ladder to preserve one mans bruised ego or would I let the relationship crumble? In thi s instance, I chose my career. But, the thing is- I should not have had to choose at all. No partner worth having would put you in the position. If your partner challenges your success, downgrades your achievements, or offers any sort of career or me ultimatum, its likely time to grab your coat and head out.According toa study by Carnegie Mellon University, people with supportive spouses are more likely to give themselves the chance to succeed. What does this mean? Out of the 163 married couples studied, the ones with the more supportive spouses were more likely to take on rewarding challenges. Those who accepted challenges experienced more personal growth, happiness, and psychological wellness. Can a good partner help your gains? Many successful men and women have attributed their professional gains to the support and sacrifice of their spouse. An Example? Beyonc says that Jay-Z has been supportive on every level, saying I would not be the woman I am if I did not go home to that man. He gives me such a foundation.Billionaire Warren Buffett says that the main turning point in his life was not a business acquisition or a multi-billion dollar merger, butmeeting his wife, Susie. Buffett describes marriage as the ultimate partnership. Without Susan Susie Buffett, Warren would not have experienced success on the scale that he has.Marry the right person. Im serious about that. It will make more difference in your life. It will change your aspirations, all kinds of things.Since celebrities arereallyjust like us, here are some of our favorite power couples- and how they champion each other every single day.Beyonc + Jay-ZOk,Lemonadewas a rough patch. A marriage under the public eye faces a ton of scrutiny. When youre Beyonc- literallyBeyonc- that scrutiny is magnified.Since we all watched this play out in real-time, I wont bore you with details. What I will say is that they both leaned into their very-public marital issues and worked (undoubtedly really hard) to fix them.El len DeGeneres + Portia de RossiIn 1992, Ellen Degeneres made the controversial decision to come out as openly gay. Years later, after getting together in 2004, de Rossi found the strength in her partner, to come out as openly gay in 2005. deRossi explains,My feelings for her overrode all of my fear about being out as a lesbian. I had to be with her, and I just figured Id deal with the other stuff later.Since then, Degeneres and de Rossi have maintained a place as one of Hollywoods most supportive power couples.Amal + George ClooneyAmal Clooney is a Lebanese-British lawyer who specializes in international law and human rights. George Clooney is her husband, an actor you may have heard of.One of the things that make Amal and George a power couple is their stark differences. Amal, having never been a part of show biz, exemplified real meaning in her own work. This is not lost on her husband, George, who admires her success, saying, Im a much happier person and we have a very happy life . We enjoy many of the saatkorn things and I very much enjoy the projects that she takes on because they havereal consequence.Jada + Will Pinkett-SmithJada and Will Smith make no bones about crediting each other for their successes. Jada largely credits Will for saving her from addiction issues she had faced in the past.In addition to the longevity of their relationship. both Pinkett-Smiths are dedicated to their marriage- their life partnership. As such. they have been brutally honest about the ups and the downs they have experienced. On their lifelong partnership, Will explains, Theres no deal breakers. Theres nothing she could do- ever- nothing that would break our relationship. She has my support till death, and it feels so good to get to that space.Chrissy Teigen + John LegendBesides being yourfavorite Twitter userand your favorite crooner. respectively, Chrissy Teigen and John Legend are a powerful and mutually-supportive couple. One of the more refreshing aspects of this coupl e is their authenticity- and we dont use that word lightly. While Teigen is famous for unapologetically sharing the good, the bad, and her post-modeling stretchmarks, Legend is equally forthcoming. On their relationship, Legend says.I dont want to present myself as the perfect spouse and I dont want to present our relationship as the perfect relationship because I dont think anybody meets that definition. I think its too much pressure to put on anyone. However, I dont mind being known as somebody whos devoted to their wife. I am devoted to Chrissy.Michelle + Barack ObamaWe love Michelle and Barack. And, no matter what side of the aisle you stand on, you cannot deny that these two people are sincerely devoted to one another.During Obamas Presidency, he took every opportunity to place praise on his beloved wife, Michelle. Post-Presidency, he has taken to introducing himself as Michelles husband.Instead of writing for days on this particular couple, I will let two quotes speak for them selves.Barack on MichelleHaving said all those things, the quality I love most about her is, shes honest and genuine. I think that comes across to people. They get a sense that they can trust her. You know, the word authenticity is overused these days. But I do think it captures what folks are looking for- not just in leaders, but also in friends and in coworkersand that is, folks who are on the level. People like that tell you what they think and dont have a bunch of hidden motives. Thats who Michelle is.Michelle on BarackBarack woke up on our wedding day in October 1992 with a nasty head cold. Somehow, by the time I met him at the altar, it had miraculously disappeared and we ended up dancing almost all night. Twenty-five years later, were still having fun, while also doing the hard work to build our partnership and support each other as individuals. I cant imagine going on this wild ride with anybody else.Rita Wilson + Tom HanksA funny aspect of finding a partner is timing. This is something Tom Hanks recognizes in his meeting (and anliegening in love with) his wife, Rita Wilson, saying,The success of our relationship was a matter of timing, maturity, and our willingness to have an intimate connection. When Hanks and Wilson married in 1988, neither were the superstars they are today. When Hanks shot to celebrity after starring inPhiladelphiain 1994, Wilson stood by his side.Their marriage has forged on for what seems like centuries, by Hollywood standards. When Wilson was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, it further cemented their bond. Wilson explains,You never know how your spouse is going to react in a situation like this. I was so amazed, so blown away by the care my husband gave me. It was such a normal, intimate time.Kristen Bell + Dax ShepardWhen Bell and Shepard met and began to date in 2007, it was a classic good girl meets bad by scenario. Bell explains that He was a drug addict and he was wild, and I was very much a good girl who went to Catho lic school. While they had a bumpy road at the beginning, Bell and Shepard married in 2013. What many people may not have known is that Shepard struggled with drugs and alcohol. On the 14th anniversary of his sobriety, Bell posted a touching tribute to Shepard, saying, I know how much you loved using. I know how much it got in your way. And I know because I saw how hard you worked to live without it. I will forever be in awe of your dedication, and the level of fierce moral inventory you perform on yourself, like an emotional surgery, every single night. You + YouDo you know who else is a great partner? Your own damn self.We live in a society that is constantly banging the drum on coupling up to experience real happiness. Some of us are great all on our own. Date yourself. How to Use Visualization to Boost Your Career - The Muse

How to Use Visualization to Boost Your Career - The MuseHow to Use Visualization to Boost Your Career One of the practices that contributes to Michael Phelps success as a swimmer takes place well before he gets into the pool. As part of his training regimen, Phelps visualizes every detail of his race- from responding to something going wrong (like ripping his suit) to crossing the finish line ahead of his competitors. Phelps has used visualization (along with other training methods, of course) to achieve incredible things in his career, like winning 28 Olympic medals to become the most decorated Olympian of all time. But you dont need to be a world-class athlete to borrow his tricks- and Im living proof.Visualization has played an absolutely essential part in hitting a number of my career goals, such as pitching high-profile clients with confidence, scaling my business to six figures, and tackling large, complex projects without feeling completely overwhelmed. My visualization practi ce has, in many ways, acted as the bridge between where I am in my career at any given moment to where I want to be- by allowing me to see and feel my future success before it actually happens.Think about building a jigsaw puzzle. Have you ever attempted to build one without having the box top to look at? It is extremely difficult to complete the puzzle without knowing what the outcome should look like, says executive leadership coach Cynthia Corsetti. You may fit pieces together, you may get bits and pieces of the puzzle done, but it will take longer, be mora challenging, and possibly never reach completion. Corsetti believes the same is true of your career the mora clear and detailed you are when you visualize what you want from your career, the easier it will be to make it a reality.Of course, while visualization can definitely help you improve performance, for the best results, you need to pair it with action. Phelps didnt just visualize himself winning races- he also spent hund reds and hundreds of hours in the pool. Want to give visualization a try? Heres what you need to know to get started.Visualization 101Whats Visualization? Before we jump into how visualization can completely transform your career, lets quickly cover what, exactly, visualization is.Visualization is the ability to create a clear picture in your mind of the exact circumstance you wish to create, says Corsetti. It has also been called setting intention, attraction, and positive thinking, she adds. Its an actual skill that a person can learn.Visualization is seeing, feeling, and completely embodying a future outcome- whether thats snagging the corner office, completing a marathon, or buying your dream home- before it happens. By creating your desired future outcome in your mind in as much detail as possible, you can actually transform your visualization into reality. The ScienceHow Does Visualization Actually Work? When you visualize yourself hitting a specific goal, your brain interprets that imagery as reality- and, as a result, creates new neural pathways to support that reality. Visualization is effective at boosting performance because it activates the same regions of the brain that are activated when actually performing a task- athletic, academic, or anything else, says Roselyn Smith, a licensed psychologist, hypnotherapist, and management consultant. It actually changes the pattern of our electrochemical brain waves. In other words, by using visualization, youre tricking your brain into acting as if your desired outcome- whether thats nailing a presentation, landing a big promotion, or launching your own business- has already happened. And because your brain thinks your desired outcome has already happened, youre more likely to take the actions necessary to align with your brains perceived reality.Visualization can even cause physical changes. One study found that participants who visualized workouts were able to increase their muscle mass by 13.5% over the co urse of 12 weeks- even though they never stepped foot inside a gym. (Imagine how much more theyd have gained if theyd actually worked out)The ExercisesWhat Visualization Exercises Can I Do to Be More Successful at Work?So research has shown that visualization can work. But how, in practice, do you use it to make you more successful? Here are a few exercises to get you started.Start With Basic VisualizationIf youre just hopping on board the visualization train, youre going to want to start with the basics. Carve out a few quiet minutes each day to sit down, close your eyes, and picture where you want to go, who you want to be, and what you want to do in your career. You can start small (like picturing yourself rocking an upcoming presentation) or go big (like celebrating your first six-figure year in business). The key to this exercise is being as specific as possible. See whats going to happen clearly in your mind. Home in on all the small details, from what youre wearing to the way youre speaking. And let yourself experience the emotions that go along with the visualization (so, for example, the sense of pride youd feel when landing a raise or the rush of excitement youd get when you launch a new product). The more realistic you can make your visualization, the more effective itll be.Picture the Worst-Case ScenarioThere are bound to be obstacles on any career journey. With visualization, you can anticipate what theyll be- and come up with a plan so you know exactly how to handle them when they arise. Lets say, for example, that youre gearing up to pitch a new project idea to your team. Visualize all the things that could go wrong- your presentation crashes, you forget important information in the middle of your pitch, your team says theyre not interested- and, more importantly, how youll handle them.Entrepreneur Tim Ferriss calls this fear-setting basically, you spend time imagining all the potential worst-case scenarios and how youd navigate them. This way, y oull be prepared and have a game plan if and when it happens, and youll be much more likely to succeed as a result.Focus on Specific Skills or GoalsAs the previously mentioned study showed, practicing a task in your mind can yield measurable results- even if you never practice that task IRL.Want to become a better public speaker? Spend time visualizing yourself speaking to large crowds. Want to increase the number of potential clients you speak to each day? Picture yourself hitting the phones and connecting with tons of prospects each day. The point is, the more you practice the skill in visualizations, the better youll be at said skill in reality.Write it DownHave a hard time visualizing things in your mind? No worries Writing down your visualizations can be just as effective as picturing them in your head- perhaps even more so.I have my clients write a story that describes in detail what they want their future to look like- down to the pictures on the wall of their office, says Co rsetti. Adults learn by using all their senses. By writing the exercise they are using their thoughts as well as the physical activity of writing which seals the idea and makes it more concrete. The Next StepsWhat Else Do I Have to Do? Clearly, visualization is a powerful tool. But heres an important reminder If you want to see real results, you need to pair it with tangible actions. You can visualize yourself calling up 100 client prospects a day- but if you never actually pick up the phone, youre not going to get the results youre looking for.Its more than just think about it and it will happen, says Corsetti. You see, when you visualize yourself as a leader, or as an entrepreneur...you have to start to respond and act as you would in that role. So, for example, if youre visualizing yourself landing a coveted promotion, in plus-rechnen to picturing yourself in this new role, you need to start acting as if youre already in it, whether that means taking on more responsibility, mentor ing newer members of your team, or logging extra hours at the office. And when you pack this one-two punch- visualization and action? Opportunities begin to present themselves. You attract people and circumstances that will help you get there, Corsetti explains. It literally steps up your game on a daily basis.Visualization is like a roadmap for that old saying- if you can dream it, you can achieve it. Because the right exercises can help you imagine the career you want. And with that vision, plus the corresponding actions, you can start making it a reality.

Ways to Avoid the Holiday Blues if Unemployed

Ways to Avoid the Holiday Blues if UnemployedWays to Avoid the Holiday Blues if UnemployedIt should be the most wonderful time of the year but for those seeking a new job or find themselves unemployed around the holidays, this time of year can be highly depressing. So, we offer ways to avoid the holiday blues if you are currently unemployed and seeking new work.Addressing why unemployment leads to holiday bluesForget about not having a job for a moment because that is an obvious reason to not be happy. Lets address why these feelings are intensified around the holiday season.1. Trying to do too muchThe reality of those with jobs who are making hiring decisions is that they tend to go on vacation around the holidays. The job postings slow down and all job interviews happening in December will not lead to a hiring decision until January (exceptions exist but not many). So, for people to try their hardest to apply for jobs in December and reach out to folks who make hiring decisions with the expectations that it will lead to results, they may just be setting their hopes too high. Of course, networking should never stop but it should be understood that there is only so much you can do when employers are going to be slow to respond due to the holidays.Trying to do too much may lead to the saddening belief that no one is interested. The simple fact is the hiring decision makers may simply be away.Avoiding holiday blues Decrease your job search expectations for the last two weeks of December. Take a break just like the people who are hiring and posting jobs. 2. Comparing ourselves to the success of the employedThis may be a good reason to stop looking at social media altogether around the holidays. People often use social media to tout their accomplishments or reasons for happiness. If you are constantly comparing yourself to others you will do nothing more than make yourself depressed. With all the success of others being shared, it is easy to forget that EVERYONE goes through tough times. Yet, we do not tend to talk about those negative times on social media. And you certainly would not help yourself by comparing yourself to others who have jobs. The simple fact is that people use social media to talk about accomplishments and share the best aspects of their lives. If you are not feeling accomplished, it would be best to stay off social channels until you begin to feel some best aspects of your life should be shared.Avoiding holiday blues Stay off or decrease time on social media, unless you have something positive to share about yourself. And even then, do not read other peoples posts unless you are strictly looking for work opportunities.3. Not taking care of your health and seasonal depressionWhen people are unemployed they have to become inventive to maintain the healthy work regimen that keeps them in shape while employed. We write many blogs with advice on how to stay productive while unemployed.Yet, when you get around the holidays you hav e several things going on at the same timePlenty of foodPlenty of timeShorter daylightAll of the above can lead to an unhealthy and depressing regimen of eating poorly and not going outside.Avoiding holiday blues Take this time to work on things that you normally felt like there was no time for in the past things that require thought and physical energy. For exampleStarting a new workout bungWorking on your resumeConnecting with old friendsReaching out to family you had not spoken with in a whileThe importance of realistic expectationsUltimately, you want to feel a realistic set of expectations were accomplished. When your job search hits full-steam ahead in January, you will feel energized. You will also feel positive about the wonderful way you spent the holidays that involved connecting with people, taking care of your health, and never expecting too much from those who were not in the position help you.Instead, you joined their parties and shared in their happiness, which is a wo nderful way to spend the holidays

April 2018 Jobs Report SummaryApril 2018 Jobs Report SummaryThe Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) released more good news about the state of the U.S. job market today. Unemployment dropped to 3.9 percent in April, the lowest mark since December 2000. Prior to last month, the unemployment satz had held steady at 4.1 percent since October 2017.The unemployment rate for workers who are 25 or older and have a college degree - the professionals in highest demand by employers - welches even lower, at just 2.1 percent in April, edging down slightly from 2.2 percent in March.Employers added 164,000 jobs in AprilThe BLS also reported that employers added 164,000 positions last month. That continues a streak of 91 consecutive months of job gains, the longest on record.Since January 2018, employers have added almost 800,000 jobs. That total includes revised numbers for February and March. According to the BLS, employment gains during those two months were 30,000 more than previously reported.P rofessional and business services sector fueling job growthEmployment in professional and business services has been growing, and that pattern continued in April, with employers adding 54,000 jobs. The BLS reported that, over the past year, this sector has created 518,000 positions. The education and health services sector added 31,000 jobs last month, with healthcare contributing 24,000 of those positions. Healthcare employers have generated 305,000 jobs over the past 12 months, according to the BLS.Manufacturing was another significant contributor to job growth in April, adding 24,000 positions. The BLS reported that manufacturing employers have expanded payrolls by 245,000 positions over the past year most of that growth was in durable goods, which include automakers and electronics manufacturers. What employers need to knowThe tightening unemployment rate is making it even harder to find skilled talent available for hire. The latest Job Openings and Labor Turnover Report from the BLS showed that employers had 6.1 million open jobs at the end of February. When hiring, you need to present your best offer out of the gate. Many in-demand professionals are weighing multiple opportunities, and you need to quickly convince them yours in the best one.Once youve made a hire, your efforts to secure that employee arent over. Be sure to provide a smooth onboarding process - one that is robust and well-orchestrated - so new team members feel valued and supported from Day One. A thoughtful approach to onboarding helps demonstrate your organizations commitment to helping new employees succeed. More importantly, it lets your hard-fought new hires know theyve made the right choice, preventing them from entertaining other job offers or returning to a former employer. What job seekers need to knowDemand for specialized workers continues to exceed supply, and leading employers recognize they need to pay at least market rates to attract the best talent. That means conditions ar e favorable for negotiating salary during the hiring process. But you need to go into these discussions well-prepared if you want to be successful. You need to be able to explain clearly and concisely why you believe you deserve to earn more. What skills, experience and attributes really tischset you apart from the field of contenders? If an employer cant meet the figure you have in mind, dont leave the table without considering other options that could help sweeten the deal. Additional perks or benefits - whether its flexible hours, a great retirement plan or something else - can prove even more valuable to you in the long run than a bigger paycheck.

Chief Joy Officer A Secret Weapon Of A Successful Business

Chief Joy Officer A Secret Weapon Of A Successful BusinessChief Joy Officer A Secret Weapon Of A Successful BusinessJoy is a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. When was the last time you felt joy in yur life? And what was the activity you were doing? I bet it wasnt anything to do with your job. To constantly feel happy at work is not something were used to. But because of the changes in technology and generations, businesses and employers started to realize that making employees happy is more than important. Believe it or not, some companies have special staff that helps their employees feel the joy at work. I had a chat with Dana Svoboda, Chief Joy Officer at Makers Academy (a web developer Bootcamp), who helps employees feel happy at work. I must say, after talking to her for just one hour, I felt a lot happier1. How did you become a Chief Joy Officer?Ive been studying and learning about personal development, spirituality, and meditation all my life. In all the jobs that Ive had, people would come to know me as the person who spreads joy. My most recent job before becoming Chief Joy Officer at Makers Academy was in the Operations Department at a high-growth tech company. The job was to oversee the smooth andrangning of the office facilities. I was soon throwing company socials and consciously shaping the companys culture to sttze and uplift staff. Individuals would also come to me seeking personal advice on all subjects. A lot of my time was spent supporting and coaching employees towards their joy. Eventually, I was teaching yoga and meditation and before I knew it, most of what I was doing was not in my job description. While I was looking for new opportunities, I met the CEO of Makers Academy. I told him I wanted to make a career move, and then he said come to my company and make people happy. That was music to my ears. Its been three and a half years since joining Makers, supporting students and staff and sharing joy, and also growing a lot myself. M akers Academy is an amazing place with amazing, inspiring people Im very lucky.2. What are the top 3 activities your job includes?First, I offer holistic coaching where I coach people one-to-one. I also run group sessions, facilitate check-in sessions for open communication and connection in teams, as well as playshops, drum circles etc. Depending on the needs of the group it can just be fun and creative and/or have a soothing therapeutic purpose.Second, Im Makers in-house yoga teacher. My classes are designed to be fun and energizing for all minds and bodies.Third, I teach mindfulness meditation coupled with an emotional intelligence curriculum. Meditation has been shown to increase happiness, concentration, clarity, reduce stress, it even lowers blood pressure. The list of benefits is long. These activities contribute to feeling more whole and balanced at work and help us to cultivate what I believe is the most important thing a positive relationship with yourself.clickToTweet tw eet=Yoga takes care of the body, meditation of the mind and one-to-ones take care of the heart and soul. ?? by DanaTw33t quote=Yoga takes care of the body, meditation takes care of the mind and one-to-ones take care of the heart and soul. ) Related articlesThe key to Leanplums epic growth? Company cultureBreakfast the most important meal of the weekHow we killed our HR department3. Why do companies need a person like you on their team?Companies need to realize that we all are emotional creatures and we need emotional support. Its a personalized care. While HR serves a purpose in spite of the stigma around it, its not the same thing. Hiring someone who, in their nature loves, appreciates and understands people and their job is to do just that is a smart idea. Businesses are made up of people, people are more effective when happy, so happiness is smart.4. How can companies measure happiness?Surveys seem to be a good approach to measure happiness in organizations. Also, speaking wit h staff on a one to one basis, hearing about how they feel at work, I find to be very useful. On top of that, there are many clues How do employees interact with each other? Whats the vibe in the office? You can tell if morale is low or if theyre happy.5. If some companies cant afford someone like you, what can they do to make their employees happier? There are many ways to improve happiness in your company. I highly recommend a 10-minute daily meditation. Do it in the morning, before youve filled your brain with emails and the news headlines. It sets you up nicely for the day. Group check-in sessions are helpful for team cohesion. They should be facilitated by someone who is good at being impartial and someone who people feel more relaxed around. It shouldnt be the CEO, for example, if everyone is trying to hide more vulnerable sides from them. A safe space to share how each person is doing and their current feelings should be established. The aim is to listen to each others concern s, struggles, hopes, triumphs etc. as empathetically as possible. An important point is not to push some objective, like after this we have to feel a certain way. Its basically a check-in. This is where I am in my life right now, I feel the way I feel, and its OK. If anybody wants to offer support, its OK, but its not about anybody having to fix something. Teams learn to own their feelings, find strength in sharing and feel more grounded.6. How did your job influence the company culture at Makers Academy?I joined Makers one year after they opened. Keeping the company alive in the first year took an incredible amount of hard work. By the time I had joined, habitual overworking seemed to be a part of the culture. While I think going full steam ahead can be quite exciting, it seemed way out of balance and not sustainable. Employees were experiencing fatigue, anxiety, burnout, recurring illness. I started placing an emphasis on well-being and over time, that aspect of our culture shifted from martyrdom to valuing self-care. Sometimes people fear that self-care will lead to laziness and complacency but in fact, the opposite happens. We become more energized and inspired Were not perfect at it, but we try to practice and encourage it because it makes sense and we feel the benefit. This feels like a big win ??7. Any last thoughts? ??Give meditation a go. departure slowly and if you miss a day, dont be hard on yourself. Keep going. Sometimes we are so far from ourselves that it can take some time to start feeling joy in our lives. I believe all the activities I mentioned can help you find your way to success.
